Madeleine has a background in security studies, with a focus on religious extremism, counter terrorism, gender studies and women, peace and security.  She holds a BA in History and Asian Studies from the University of Queensland and an MSc in Middle Eastern Politics from the School of Oriental and African Studies where she focused on counter terrorism, gender and Islamic extremism.  Madeleine has worked in research, communications and event management at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute and ran the ASPI Women in Defence and Security Network (WDSN), which aims to enhance the professional skills and networking opportunities of women in the defence and security industry. Madeleine has authored several papers for ASPI, including a chapter on counter terrorism and social media for the 2019 Counterterrorism Yearbook, and was an editor and author for a report on global people smuggling. 

She worked in government communications and public relations in London and was a researcher for the Institute for Islamic Strategic Affairs, working in their jihadism program. For the past year Madeleine has worked for a global risk consultancy, helping businesses navigate the political, security and financial risks in their operating environments. In December 2019, she commenced her current role as a Research Associate with the Lowy Institute, examining the rules-based international order and its implications for Australian security and defence. She also provides support to the Institutes Executive Director, including research and writing support for public events, articles, media appearances and podcasts.
