Nick Floyd

Chief of Army Visiting Fellow

Since 2004, Nick has served chiefly on the Australian Army Headquarters staff in Canberra, in its directorate of Strategy and International Engagement. In 2005-2006 he deployed to Iraq, working as a Coalition Plans Officer in the Multi-National Corps – Iraq Headquarters, and as partner to the Chief Planner in the Iraqi Ground Forces Command. On his return to Canberra, he was appointed as Deputy Director Strategy – Army until the end of 2008.

After graduation from the Royal Military College, Duntroon into the Royal Australian Artillery in 1989, Nick was posted to a variety of regiments and headquarters, including appointments at recruit and training establishments. He attended the Australian Defence Force School of Languages in 2002, qualifying as a French linguist, and graduated from the Australian Command and Staff Course, Canberra in 2003.

He holds a baccalaureate in History, and a Master of Letters with Distinction in Palaeoanthropology/Archaeology and History from the University of New England. His thesis explored the early strategic relationship between New Caledonia and Australia and their respective colonial masters. He also holds a Masters in Defence Studies Management from the University of Canberra, and maintains broad interests across the wider humanities and sciences, and in strategic communications.

Lieutenant Colonel Nick Floyd comes to the Lowy Institute having had diverse and extensive experience in the arenas of strategy, planning and engagement with other militaries, defence forces and government agencies in his military career.
